1956 DKW RT200 Custom Desert Racer being offered with a clear California title. This unique motorcycle was customized back in the day by Jim McNiel. In 1959 Jim purchased and years later restored the iconic Hirohata Merc hot rod (which the family still owns today), this was the motorcycle he had before purchasing the car. In 1973 it was stashed in the back of the family garage behind the Merc and was kept hidden under blankets until last year. I purchased it from the family at that time, unfortunately the racing history is unknown. To with stand the rigors of off road racing a 1950's Triumph front end was employed as well as a custom rear fender, "cheater" layover rear wheel sprocket and scrambling tires. Because of the large tires the center stand does not funtion as well as it should. The graphics and lining are something else. Check out the photos for the details that went into this build.
Sold with the bike is the matching helmet, also of German origin made by Drax Helm dating from the 1950'. Information about for sale on this page. See price and photos of the
Not currently running, being a two stroke it shouldn't be that challenging to get it going, it does kick over with compression. Nothing has been touched since 1973. The front tire does not hold air. The fuel tank will need cleaning internally. The seat does not fit with the Wassell fender, it probably had a bates racing seat or similar back in the day when it was raced.
Check out all the photographs below as they show clearly how the bike sits today. A very cool vintage racer with a ton of great provenance. Sold with a clear California title. Shipping is the buyers responsibility, I can assist with local delivery if needed.
